The diversity of Fish in the Indian River Lagoon

Catching Sheepshead on our fishing charter tour.

Fishing is a great way to enjoy Florida’s picturesque Indian River Lagoon. With our unique fishing charters, Banana River Boat Tours offers the perfect way for fishing enthusiasts to take advantage of this incredible environment.

For those unfamiliar with the area, The Indian River Lagoon is home to a variety of fish. The waters are filled with small tarpon, trout, snook, redfish, black drum, sheepshead, tarpon, pompano, and more.

Whether you are using artificial or live bait, it is essential to know what type of fish you hope to catch before heading out on your trip.

Redfish

When most anglers think of a typical Florida inshore fishing trip, they imagine this hard-fighting type of fish. They enjoy shallow, grassy waters. Thus the Indian River ticks all the boxes when it comes to this fish’s ideal environment.

Redfish are known to hit various bait, but most prefer shrimp as they are bottom feeders.

Shrimp, crabs, and mullet can all be used as bait for redfish.

Speckled Trout

The Indian River Speckled Trout fishing is world-famous, and deservedly so. Speck, the Florida state record, was caught here, weighing in at over 17 pounds. Satisfy your fishing hunger with this catch of the day!

Flounder

The Indian River Lagoon is home to a large population of small-sized flounders, known as sand perch among anglers. These fish can be found in holes and pockets close to oyster bars or other structures on shallow flats.

The following are the best bait to catch flounder:

  • minnow/squid
  • live finger mullet
  • live spot
  • shrimp

Snook

The snook is a much sought-after species known for its fighting abilities. Snooks are often caught in similar locations as redfish or trout but can be found in all areas of the lagoon where there is structure to provide them with ambush points.

Try fishing dock lights for Snook for the best chances of success. Bottom jigs or swimmer bait, artificial crabs and shrimp, or live bait such as menhaden, mullet, or sardines can be used.

When Snook is active in the summer, you can get lucky casting topwater baits and plugs.

Benefits of a Fishing Charter

When it comes to fishing in the Indian River Lagoon, it’s just not the same as fishing in other waters.

That is why it is best to hire a professional for your next trip here. It’s imperative to have someone who can teach you how to catch these fish and share with you their local knowledge of where they tend to hide!

Benefits of hiring a professional fishing charter include:
